The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns
(SATB & optional Keyboard), (GIA: G-3744)
Written in 1990, this piece is an arrangement of Morning Song, an 18th century
American hymn-tune. The text is suitable for Advent and any theme connected with
the so-called "end-time" readings. The middle verse is set in a remote key and in triple meter.
This track is from the CD recorded by the choir of St. John's Cathedral, Cleveland, OH.
Greg Heislman, director.

Newborn.mp3
|
The text for the hymn "As newborn stars were stirred to song" was written by Carl Daw and
commissioned by the San Francisco Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The Chapter
then sponsored a competition for a tune to go with the text, and this was the winning tune.
It is published in the supplement to the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal, called Wonder, Love and
Praise. The tune is named Alexandra after Alexandra Ivanoff, a singer and arts manager
flourishing in the SF Bay Area, a former partner and still a close friend.
I have also written a "concertato" arrangement of the tune for assembly, organ
and brass, which is available from the composer. It is performed on the CD by the Girls' Choir
of the Washington National Cathedral, Bruce Neswick, director and organist. The CD is available
from Church Publishing Company.

Child of Sweetness.mp3

Child of Sweetness
(SATB & two Soprano soloists), (Trinitas: 4521TR)
This piece was composed in 1992. The text, by Russian Orthodox
monk Alexander Bogolepov, dwells on the dual nature of Christ as divine and human,
as seen through the knowing, yet astonished eyes of his mother, Mary. I've tried to
bring out this duality by creating a bi-tonal piece, which uses a Russian style choral
treatment offset by two remote soloists. It is the title track of a Christmas CD
by the Cathedral Singers of
Holy Name Cathedral,
Chicago, IL, Matthew Walsh, director.

Now the Green Blade Rises
(SATB, Flute & optional Handbell), (GIA: G-3234)
Here is an arrangement of the French Noel Nouvelet, which uses the alternate Easter text
by John Crum, as found in many current hymnals. The first and last verse feature unison
treble singers (or a solo) and obligatory flute, with a little handbell chiming in for effect.
This track is from the CD, "Love is Come Again" performed by the singers of
Sacred Heart Cathedral
in Newark, NJ, David Fedor, director.

Mass for the Saint of Joy
(SATB, Assembly, Organ, Brass & Percussion) (Available from the Composer)
This mass was commissioned to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the ordination of
Rev. Dennis Corrado, C.O., who I once worked with when I was at St. James Cathedral
in Brooklyn. The commission stated that I should write the choir parts in English and the
assembly parts in Latin, which turned out to be an interesting hybrid. The Gloria has a
minimalist feel to it, while the Sanctus is unabashedly grandiose (you can hear the
elephants tromping in!) and the Agnus Dei owes much to the work of Igor Stravinsky,
a favorite composer. This untitled recording is by the choir of
the Oratory of St. Boniface (the Brooklyn Oratory), Dennis Delaney, director. It was taken
from a special celebration in which the mass was played. You will hear quite a bit of
crowd noise, as well as the singing of the assembly intermingled with the choir.

The Little Organ Mass is a distillation of a piece written for organ and choir,
commissioned by St. Marks Lutheran Church in San Francisco, Rodney Gehrke, director of music.
The harmonic language of the piece is best described as "modal", with influences by Dupré,
Hindemith, Milhaud, Bach and Jazz thrown in. In most cases, the harmonies are not resolved in the
traditional way, yet I have tried to retain an air of harmonic "familiarity" for the listener. It
is published by Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, MO.

"Variations on Auld Lang Syne" was written for organist Alison Luedecke and
the Millenia Consort, a San Diego-based brass group. The piece was premiered
at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion there on New Year's Eve, 1999. The original
intent was to write a short piece to be played as some sort of fanfare, but
it soon developed into much more than that. It is a largely boisterous "party
piece," which is challenging for players but pretty accessible for the
audience. Currently, the piece is not published, but it can be obtained by
contacting me directly. The snippets are from a live recording at a concert
in Corpus Christi, Texas.
